What is better: a seal or a thread?

For comfortable smoking, the tightness of the stem and base is important. Air can enter the channel through a loose connection, obstructing the flow of smoke. Low tightness leads to a quick loss of hookah flavor and weak pull. The two common types of connections are threading and seal.

Seal.

A time-tested method that is still used today. The base and stem are connected with a seal made of silicone or rubber. It is not always included with the hookah, sometimes it needs to be purchased separately. Choose a seal based on the diameter of the hookah stem base and the diameter of the top of the base. The tightness of the connection should be checked by trial and error. Smoke should not leak from the joint. If you have chosen a hookah with a seal, do not hold it by the stem. The base may fall and break. The seal will deform over time. But replacement is very inexpensive.

Thread.

Hookahs with threads appeared later. This connection method is more reliable. The thread tightly and hermetically connects the base to the stem. The hookah is easy to assemble and disassemble. The downside compared to the seal is that over time, rust appears on the metal. Therefore, choose stainless steel. If, nevertheless, the thread is destroyed, you can select a new stem or base. Minus: for some manufacturers, unfortunately, finding a spare base will be a huge problem and will most likely end in the purchase of a new hookah with a seal.

Of these two methods, threading is more convenient and reliable. The hookah is easy to assemble and can be carried by the stem without fear of the base falling. It is difficult to achieve such a tightness with a seal.

What other methods of fastening are there?

In addition to the seal and thread, there are now other connection methods. They are less common, but are already gaining popularity.

Click system.

German manufacturer Amy has patented a new Click system. Then other brands began to use it. With this system, the hookah is assembled and disassembled literally in one movement. To ensure a tight seal, simply turn the fastener slightly clockwise. Without turning back, the bulb does not come off, so the hookah can be carried by the stem. The click system does not spoil the appearance of the hookah, as it is hidden inside the base and stem. Plus, it can be replaced if it breaks.

Magnets.

Magnetic connection is not common, but some manufacturers produce such hookahs. The connection is reliable and sealed. The only problem is that it demagnetizes over time. Therefore, it’s worth checking right away whether there is a possibility of replacement.

Lapping.

The most unreliable method of fastening. The tube with a metal connector “grinds” against the stem. Additional fasteners and seals are not used. For the first two months, grinding keeps the connection tight, then the tube begins to fly out of the connector. And this does not depend on the manufacturer. The lapping wears off over time. It lasts for several months.

Orings.

Type of seals. They are silicone rings that fit onto the connector. Orings hold up better than standard seals, but break over time. And finding them in stores is more difficult.

So seals and threads are two common and reliable methods of fastening. The thread provides better tightness and allows the use of additional accessories to improve the properties of the hookah.
